RELATIVE CALM

Shanghai Opera House

RELATIVE CALM is a theater work created by two masters of postmodern art, Robert Wilson and Lucinda Childs. The work was premiered in 1981, and after 41 years, the two decided to collaborate on it again. Created last year, the crossover piece is a beautiful blend of newly choreographed music, visuals, drama and dance all rolled into 70 minutes.

WHEN FUTURE MEETS THE PAST

When the Future Meets the Past explores the nature of time as its theme, and opens up the creation and imagination of the future by drawing inspiration from history and tradition. The artists first travelled to Guizhou to carry out field observation of representative intangible cultural heritage such as local folklore festivals, traditional songs and dances, handicrafts and natural ecology. Then they return to the city to present site-specific art co-creation projects in three distinctive Shanghai art and cultural spaces.

GLOBAL TALK: When Arts Become Magical

​Under the theme of "When Arts Become Magical", the inaugural ARTRA Global Talk invites renowned creators from the fields of visual arts, dance, theater and other stage arts, as well as directors of famous domestic and international festivals and exhibitions, and senior arts practitioners to engage in a dialogue. The guests will be divided into two groups, focusing on the collision and fusion of visual arts and stage arts, sharing their experiences and views, and stimulating in-depth discussions and artistic inspiration on the topics of artistic creation and innovative project operation in an interdisciplinary and multi-media context.

The newest invited work in the "Urban Exploration" public programme is "Not the Moon", a large-scale public light installation created by MAD Architects, led by renowned architect MA Yansong. This project combines art and technology, and displaying the multi-dimensional expression of the contemporary city in the era of new media, thus triggering the public's cultural empathy in the real space of the city.
